Ministries to team up to advance community-level development

The Local Government and Regional Development Ministry intends to accelerate and enhance its collaboration with other ministries and agencies as part of its focus on providing more efficient and effective services in 2012. The ministry is responsible for ensuring citizens of the 10 administrative regions benefit from programmes, initiatives and opportunities made available by the central government, at the community level, Local Government and Regional Development Minister Ganga Persaud accompanied by Minister within the ministry Norman Whittaker made this disclosure at a press briefing Thursday afternoon at the ministry’s boardroom in Kingston to highlight the works executed by the ministry during 2011 and the ministry’s proposed interventions for the coming year. Also in attendance were Permanent Secretary Collin Croal, Chief Regional Development Officer Sewchan and Advisor to both ministers, Clinton Collymore.

According to a Government Information Agency (GINA) release, the ministry will seek to especially enhance closer collaboration with Amerindian Affairs, health, public works, agriculture, and human services, social security and labour ministries that will, in addition to better services, cut costs at the Regional and Neighbourhood Democratic Councils level, Minister Persaud said. At the level of permanent secretaries, they will be meeting monthly with technical officers next year to rectify any setbacks that may occur at the administrative levels in the ministries as they collaborate at the community level.

The Local Government Ministry will also in 2012 work more closely with the Housing and Water Ministry to address the handing over of a number of completed housing schemes to municipalities and NDCs to create additional revenue for municipalities and the NDCs, Minister Persaud said. To further enhance the effectiveness of the Local Government Ministry, the ministry is currently taking stock of its human resource capacity to reshuffle persons to areas that match their capabilities so as to maximise their potential and the efforts of the ministry at the regional and community levels.
